Get Beyond Selfish Prayers

Let us take heed that we pray for others also. Let us beware of selfish prayers – the prayers which are wholly taken up with our own affairs, and in which there is no place for other souls beside our own. Let us name all whom we love before God continually. Let us pray for all – the worst, the hardest, and the most unbelieving. Let us continue praying for them year after year, in spite of their continued unbelief. God’s time of mercy may be a distant one. Our eyes may not see an answer to our intercession. The answer may not come for ten, fifteen, or twenty years. It may not come until we have exchanged prayer for praise, and are far away from this world. But while we live, let us pray for others. The greatest kindness we can do to anyone is to speak for them to our Lord Jesus Christ. The day of judgment will show that one of the greatest links in drawing some souls to God, has been the intercessory prayer of friends.

A good review of David Platt’s book: Radical

Though I don’t agree with all that Kevin criticizes, I think he does provide some thoughts with regards to balance in the Christian life.

Click here to read the review.

I think Kevin has some good points, but I also think he went where David didn’t go…. I’m re-reading so I’ll confirm my thoughts on this as to whether I’m correct on this matter; However, I don’t think David was saying people should give more money to feed the poor.  Conversely, I think He was saying we need to  give of ourselves.  It was about sacrificing some of our own self (going on mission trips) and not just giving more money.  There was an example of a man in another country where David went who told David that it meant more to them that he came personally, than to simply send a check.

Anyway, I think its good to see these reviews and get a better handle on the mission of the Church and the call of Christ for our lives.

What I got out of this book was 1) Stop navel gazing 2) Stop being selfish 3) Start thinking of others and 4) Give of yourself and not just your money.

The Radical challenge at the end of the book focuses on what I believe God has called every believer to do.  I think it would “radically” change the world if believers in America gave 2 weeks a year to some gospel cause or mission (whether local or global) to serve Christ and others.

Are you a real Christian?

This article “What is a True Christian“, by Jeremy Walker, is worth reading.  It could be a matter of life or death.

I would highly recommend your reading of this article.  May the Lord provide us with a saving knowledge of himself, and for him a devoted people.

Radical: A look at genuine Christianity.

I’m on my second reading of this book, and I continue to have the same opinion now as I did on my first pass through it.  Are we thinking the same way as Jesus?  If not, then we may find ourselves re-defining Christianity to fit our thoughts of how Jesus would act and speak today, in 21st century America?

This clip, provided by David Platt, provides his thoughts as he wrote this book through the power and grace of God.  I encourage you to listen to his comments and then go purchase the book and read it. If you are a Christian, you will begin to examine your own life to see if you are sincerely committed to the Christ of the Bible or simply a fan.

Don’t despise the day of small things

“For who has despised the day of small things”? (Zech 4:10)

Some days it feels as though we haven’t made much progress in our walk with the Lord.  For me, it can be more likes weeks and months, not days.  But even during these times, my soul is reminded of the scriptures and what God says regarding our “small” triumphs over sin.  It is my desire to blog about the things God is doing in my life, as a redeemed sinner saved by Grace!  And, with God’s help, to encourage you along the way as you seek to find your way to the Celestial City.  Below is a quote from Thomas Brookes.  He speaks to the matter of “small things” and not despising them, as they are proofs from the Lord that we can be safe, even though it appears we are not where we would like to be.

“A man may have grace, and yet not see it, yet not know it; and this may arise from his non-searching, his non-examining, his non-ransacking, of his own soul. There is gold in the mine, and men might find it, if they would but dig and search diligently after it. There is grace in the heart, and you might see it, if you would but take the candle of the Lord and look narrowly after it. Look, as many a man upon a diligent search may find his temporal estate to be better than he apprehends it, so many choice souls upon a diligent search may find their spiritual estate to be far better than they conceived or judged it to be. Therefore souls, cease from complaining, cease from rash judging and dooming of yourselves to hell, and be diligent in inquiring what the Lord hath done, and what the Lord is a-doing, in you and for you. Compare the books together, compare his working upon you and others together. What! is there no light, no love, no longings, no hungerings, no thirstings after God? What! is there no sighing, no complaining, no mourning, under the sense of sin, and under the want of divine favour? Surely if you search, you will find some of these things; and if you do, prize them as jewels that are more worth than a world. God will not despise “the day of small things,” and will you? Will you, dare you, say that that is little that is more worth than heaven? The least spark of grace shall at last be turned into a crown of glory. Well! remember this, that as the least grace, if true and sincere, is sufficient to salvation, so the sense of the least grace should be sufficient to your consolation.” (from Works of Thomas Brookes: Heaven On Earth, A Treatise of Christian Assurance)

So may you be encouraged by those small glimmers of truth within your soul, and may the Lord strengthen you in your pursuit of Godliness. Don’t despise the day of small things. These are evident marks of a man of God.
